How to Evaluate a Website Before Buying a Guest Post
Paying for a guest-post placement on the wrong site is worse than buying nothing — bad links can hurt you. Whether you’re an agency buying at scale or a business buying your first link, run every prospect through this checklist before you pay.
1. Check real organic traffic
This is the #1 metric. A site should have genuine, stable organic traffic in a tool like Ahrefs or SEMrush. Be suspicious of:
- Traffic that spiked suddenly in the last 2–3 months (often manipulated)
- Traffic from irrelevant countries for the site’s niche
- High DR with near-zero traffic (a classic inflated-metrics PBN sign)
2. Look at Domain Rating in context
DR (Ahrefs) or DA (Moz) estimates link authority — useful, but never alone. A DR 50 site with 200 monthly visitors is worth less than a DR 30 site with 20,000. Always pair authority metrics with traffic.
3. Read the actual content
Open 5 recent articles and ask:
- Is it written for humans or stuffed with keywords?
- Are posts published regularly or was the last one 8 months ago?
- Do articles cover one coherent niche, or random topics (crypto today, plumbing tomorrow)?
Sites that publish anything for anyone are link farms wearing a blog costume.
4. Inspect the outbound links
Check who the site already links to. Red flags: dozens of exact-match commercial anchors, links to casinos or pharma, or “write for us” pages openly advertising “dofollow links for sale” with a price list. A site selling links to everyone dilutes the value of yours.
5. Verify indexing and penalties
Search site:example.com on Google. If few or no pages are indexed, the site may be penalized or deindexed — a link from it is worthless or harmful.
6. Ask about link attributes
Confirm before paying: is the link dofollow? Will it stay permanently, or get removed after a year? Is it placed in the article body? Get it in writing — reputable sellers answer clearly.
Quick scoring sheet
Rate each prospect 1–5 on: relevance, traffic, authority, content quality, link neighborhood. Buy only sites scoring 18+/25. It takes 10 minutes per site and saves you from 90% of bad buys.
What fair pricing looks like
As a rough 2026 guide: new but legitimate blogs $30–80, established niche blogs $100–300, high-authority publications $500+. If someone offers DR 70+ placements for $20, you’re not getting a deal — you’re getting a PBN.
The golden rule: you’re not buying a link, you’re renting trust. Only pay for trust that actually exists.
